How to choose rubber antioxidants - targeting several types of rubber
2012-04-11
Due to the different types of rubber and vulcanization methods, different rubber antioxidants need to be selected. Below is how to choose suitable rubber antioxidants for several types of rubber:
1 Antioxidants for NR and SBR
When selecting antioxidants, considerations should be made to improve the rubber's heat resistance, ozone resistance, and flexural resistance. Antioxidants with good sustained stability tend to be more effective.
2 Antioxidants for NBR
For NBR, ozone cracking aging agents are more effective. This is because the antioxidants have good compatibility with NBR, making it difficult to migrate to the rubber surface. When used with paraffin, it can enhance ozone resistance. For NBR, using low molecular weight paraffin is more effective.
3 Antioxidants used for CR
Compared to NR and SBR, CR has excellent ozone resistance; however, long-term use can still lead to ozone cracking. In CR, adding a small amount of 810-NA (IPPD), 6C, DP, and other ozone cracking aging agents can significantly improve ozone resistance. Additionally, as a persistent heat-resistant antioxidant, CD (dicyandiamide) is effective.
4 Antioxidants used for ECO
Chlorinated ether rubber (ECO) is prone to softening aging. Effective antioxidants to inhibit softening aging include NBC (dibutyl dithiocarbamate nickel), MB (mercaptobenzimidazole), and 224 (TMDQ). In chlorinated ether rubber, excessive use of amine antioxidants can reduce ozone resistance.
5 Antioxidants used in ACM (acrylate rubber)
Acrylate rubber aging includes both hardening and softening aging. Therefore, it is necessary to choose suitable antioxidants. For hardening aging type acrylate rubber, antioxidant CD is more effective, while for softening aging type acrylate rubber, antioxidants 224 and 6C can be selected.
6 Antioxidants used for peroxide-cured EPDM rubber
For peroxide-cured rubber, antioxidants are generally selected from imidazole types such as MB and MBZ (zinc salt of mercaptobenzimidazole). Additionally, among amine antioxidants, 224 and CD can be chosen for their lesser impact on crosslinking. In EPDM, combining MB with 224 or CD antioxidants can provide excellent heat resistance. Since they are ineffective in sulfur-cured rubber, these types of antioxidants are not used.
When selecting rubber antioxidants, it is important to consider the characteristics of the rubber and the properties of the rubber antioxidants to choose the appropriate rubber antioxidant.
